Potential donors for each agency are reviewed based on a number of medical and lifestyle criteria.  Prospective parents are given a detailed medical history along with photos of the donor, but the intended parents do not meet the donor.  

Anonymity guarantees two benefits:  It ensures the donors' privacy is completely protected.  Anonymity also protects the intended parents from any possible legal complications.  (That said, in some cases donors may allow the possibility of future contact if the child someday wishes to meet his/her ‘biological mother’.)
